Literacy is a core priority at Coatesville Primary School. We use an evidence informed, structured approach to ensure all students develop strong reading, writing and communication skills.
Our reading program is aligned with the science of reading. In the early years, students receive explicit teaching of phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, supported by decodable texts. As students progress, teaching focuses on deep comprehension, vocabulary development and engagement with a wide range of rich, high quality texts.
Writing is taught explicitly and systematically. Students learn the foundations of spelling, grammar and sentence structure while developing the skills to craft clear, cohesive and purposeful texts across a range of genres. Teachers model quality writing and provide clear success criteria and feedback to support improvement.
Oral language is embedded across all classrooms, with regular opportunities for discussion, collaboration and presentation to build confidence and communication skills.
Assessment is used to guide teaching and identify individual needs. Targeted intervention and extension ensure every student is supported and challenged appropriately.
Through consistent teaching practices and high expectations, we support all students to become confident, capable and engaged users of language.
