Mathematics at Coatesville Primary School balances explicit teaching of core number skills with rich, inquiry based learning that promotes deep understanding, reasoning and problem solving.
Students develop strong foundations in number, operations and mathematical language through clearly structured lessons. Concepts and strategies are taught deliberately and revisited over time to build fluency, accuracy and confidence. Teachers model thinking, make learning intentions explicit and ensure students understand both the how and the why of mathematics.
Alongside this, students regularly engage in open ended and inquiry based tasks that require them to apply their skills in meaningful ways. These tasks encourage students to investigate, reason, collaborate and justify their thinking, often drawing on authentic, real life contexts that make learning relevant and purposeful.
Problem solving is embedded across all year levels, with students supported to explain their strategies, test ideas and learn from challenge. Assessment is used to inform teaching and identify when students require additional support or extension.
Through this balanced approach, we develop confident mathematicians who are fluent in essential skills and capable of applying their learning flexibly to new and real world situations.
